While working with Healing Words at UAB, it has been a wonderful experience. I liked meeting and working with patients and staff. I also liked volunteering. It brings joy to my heart to make a change for those in need. The experience that I had with patients and their families is getting to know them and having a wonderful and spiritual connection with them. The most challenging experience with healing Words is dealing with the Coronavirus or COVID-19. It is a huge challenge because you miss the connections you made with everyone. My key takeaway from this day is making sure that everyone understands how important it is to make a huge difference in someone's life at UAB.

At the UAB Healing Words, I am enjoying Palliative Comfort and Care Unit. The staff is so sweet and kind. They are very uplifting. I enjoy spending time with the patients because I get to know them more. I love reading to them and keeping them company. I like getting to know everyone even the doctors and the chaplain. Also, I like comforting those who lost a loved one because I want those who lost a loved one to know that they are not alone and they have a wonderful support system. The most challenging is trying not cry with the family because you have to be strong for them when their loved one has passed away. My key takeaway from this day is getting to know the family and reading to the patients.

I learned about how to network and meet different people who work for our county. I learned about the different ways on how to help our homeless youth in the Greater Birmingham area and how to advocate about racism in our community by going to one press conference. I liked to meet new participants/clients, marketing, and helping out many individuals who needed our help. The most challenging was trying to figure out how to communicate with different people who are in different positions without trying to get your words to be said wrong. My key takeaway from this day was making that huge impact on others.
