This semester I have worked with Youth Towers. I have had a very busy semester and had fallen behind on my hours a bit. A few weeks ago I went to Mrs. Westery and explained that I was having a tough time because of prior commitments and asked her what I could do. She is a very nice and caring lady she sat down with me and explained some ways that I could make up some hours and also contribute to the cause. She explained that some of the other students had completed special projects on their own to contribute to their organizations. So I gathered materials from the community and my work a nonprofit organization and made 45 hygiene bags for the Youth Towers and 10 feminine hygiene bags for the ladies only. Mrs. Westery was very grateful for these. I only wish I could have done more. I was very pleased with her organization and the work they do for this community. Mrs. Westery puts her heart into her work to do the most good she possibly can for the youth she serves.
Attended Birmingham City Council Meeting
This semester I have served with Youth Towers of Birmingham. One of the ways you can contribute is to attend Birmingham City Council Meetings. Prior to this, I have never been interested in politics. I have attended several meetings and find it interesting how things work. I realize that politics and networking are a very large part of being a social worker. I prefer working hands-on with the needy. I know we need support from the community to raise awareness and receive contributions for supplies and things in need. To me, after working with the less fortunate it humbles a person and politics can sometimes be very trivial and too much petty fighting going on over things that really aren't that important, such as too many leaves in someone's yard. The Birmingham city council we have is definitely the best one we have had in recent years and they have done a lot of good for our community and each district they represent. My opinion is still the same I would much rather work hands-on and with clients personally than be involved in politics.
